Position Summary:

The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science (EMS) at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of mathematics to commence August 21, 2019. The Department seeks exceptional candidates committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching. This position will contribute to existing mathematics and statistics programs; mentor undergraduate research and collaborate with faculty across disciplines to meet the evolving needs of industry, particularly in the areas of data science and the industrial internet of things. 

 

Responsibilities:

The assistant professor is a nine-month position.

  • The primary responsibility will be to teach undergraduate mathematics or statistics courses (12 credits/semester, with two or three preparations).
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop new interdisciplinary programs.
  • Provide opportunities for students to engage in undergraduate research.
  • Engage in scholarly and professional development activities.
  • Participate in university/community service and outreach activities.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, or related field.
  • Teaching experience at the college level, which may be fulfilled by two semesters of a half-time teaching assistantship in graduate school.
  • Demonstrated commitment to, or experience with diverse populations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

The College of EMS enrolls approximately 3,400 students in BS degree programs that are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET in Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Mechanical, Software Engineering, and Engineering Physics; and B.S. degrees in Mathematics, Broad Field Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Sustainability and Renewable Energy Systems. UW-Platteville is a student-focused, primarily undergraduate institution that is known for its personal, hands-on approach with students. Striving to be the institution of choice in the region for students and employers in engineering, mathematics, and science, UW-Platteville generates the second-largest number of BS engineering graduates in the state of Wisconsin. The university is ranked #35 out of 205 nationally among undergraduate engineering programs and offers a ranked online Master of Science in Engineering program. Construction of a new engineering building (100,000 square feet) has recently been approved and occupancy is planned for fall 2022.  

The Mathematics Department, in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, has 23 full-time tenure/tenure track positions, and regularly employs an additional 6-11 academic staff. The department offers undergraduate degrees in mathematics, mathematics education, mathematics with an emphasis in actuarial science, and mathematics with an emphasis in finance, and minors in mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics. The department also serves programs in engineering, science, technology, business, and education. Class sizes are approximately 30 students. The department has an active Pi Mu Epsilon student chapter and Mathematics Club. The faculty and staff also have a strong interest in outreach activities and are involved in undergraduate research projects in mathematics and statistics.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville, founded in 1866, enrolls about 8,000 students in 42 baccalaureate and 6 master's programs. It possesses institutional strengths in middle level education, engineering, industrial technology, agriculture, criminal justice and business. The campus is located in Southwest Wisconsin's largest and most historic community. The region offers excellent school systems, high quality medical and hospital facilities, outstanding recreational opportunities, and vibrant businesses and industries. UW-Platteville is a cultural and educational center for the Tri-State region of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.
