Position Summary:

We invite applications for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor who will contribute to the newly established Environmental Science and Conservation program established within the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The ideal candidate will engage with diverse partners and will draw from Traditional Ecological Knowledge and western science to inform their teaching, mentoring, and scholarship to create profound learning experiences around the restoration and stewardship of the diverse ecological communities of the Driftless Area.

Responsibilities:

  • 60%-Teaching - The teaching duties for this position will include 3 to 4 courses per semester that contribute to the interdisciplinary core curriculum of the Environmental Science and Conservation major. The successful candidate will teach an integral feature of this curriculum in the newly created Land Ethic course. This course is designed to holistically engage students on topics relevant to land stewardship through discussions of ethics, justice, and ecology linked with applied, field-based learning that includes prescribed burning. An ability to contribute to the department’s GIS offerings is required. Additional teaching duties may include a range of existing courses, small undergraduate research seminars, or additional offerings designed by the candidate. Potential themes of interest for new courses include, but are not limited to, ethnobotany, sustainable food systems, social and environmental justice, and Tribal sovereignty. Although this is a 9-month position, additional teaching and mentoring opportunities may be available over the summer depending on department, college, or university needs and the interest of the successful candidate. The candidate’s ability to weave a theme of reciprocity throughout their teaching and mentoring activities is strongly desired. 
  • 20% - Scholarly Activity- The scholarship, research, and creative activities of the successful candidate will complement and expand the offerings of faculty engaged in the Tree-Ring, Earth, and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (TREES Lab) and create opportunities for students to participate in authentic inquiry through undergraduate research. The ideal candidate’s scholarly work will employ Traditional Ecological Knowledge to promote understanding and movement toward sustainability in the broadest sense. Equally important to the specific field of work, we seek a colleague who will thoughtfully craft their scholarly efforts to contribute to the intellectual vibrancy and sense of community among our students, department, college, and university. 
  • 20% - Service- Service duties will include participation in self-governance at the department, college, and university level and engagement with the broader professional and public communities. Additionally, the successful candidate will collaborate with the UW-Platteville Office of Sustainability to update and implement the Campus Land Management Plan and channel student efforts through classes, research, and club activities to help tend the 120 hectares of ecological systems on the UW-Platteville main campus. These include multiple native prairies, an oak savanna, a remnant goat prairie, an old-growth maple-basswood forest, and over 1.5 miles of coldwater class I trout stream and associated floodplain. Opportunities also exist to engage with the lands of the UW-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County and UW-Platteville Richland branch campuses if desired, including participation in the Ice Age Trail Alliance at Baraboo and the Pine River and Brush Creek riparian management projects at Richland. 

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • PhD in Geography, Environmental Science or Studies, or another conservation-related field including, but not limited to, Anthropology, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Landscape Architecture, Planning or other fields engaged with scholarship at the nexus of human-environment relationships
  • Pedagogy statement explaining exceptional potential to contribute to the teaching mission of the Department and University 
  • Experience employing diverse knowledge systems in teaching, research, and scholarship
  • Ability to teach undergraduate students through field, classroom, and laboratory settings that engage modern pedagogy
  • Ability to teach introductory GIS courses
  • Personal knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, the native plant communities of the Driftless Area and their long-term relationships with humans and the environment
  • Record of training, or a willingness to develop a record of training through professional development, in fire certifications relevant to land stewardship activities and related teaching and scholarly work (e.g., courses within the RX-and-S-series offered by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Department Information:

The Department of Geography offers a B.S. in Environmental Science and Conservation, along with minors in Environmental Science, Social and Environmental Justice, Geography, and GIS, and certificates in Social and Environmental Justice and GIS. The Department includes four tenure-line faculty positions and two instructional academic staff positions.

Our teaching and research facilities are exceptional and include ample teaching space, excellent natural science laboratories, a field equipment room that provides easy access for loading gear and equipping student groups for field-based learning, and a beautiful outdoor laboratory provided by the campus grounds that include extensive open space, woodlands, a meandering stream, restored native prairies, and the geologically diverse and biologically rich Platte Mound.

Our department is home to the Tree-Ring, Earth, and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (TREES Lab) which will move into a 2000+ ft2, newly renovated laboratory space in 2021 upon completion of the Boebel Hall renovations (https://www.uwplatt.edu/boebel-hall-renovation). The TREES Lab is fully equipped for research in tree-ring, wood anatomy, charcoal, soil, and sediment analysis and is a hub of undergraduate research at UW-Platteville.

Campus Information

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville, founded in 1866, is located in the Driftless Area of southwest Wisconsin and on lands within the ancestral territories of many Indigenous people, including the Ho-Chunk, Kiikaapoi, Peoria, Sauk and Meskwaki, Myaamia, and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ. The university enrolls about 7,500 students in 42 baccalaureate and 6 masters programs. Institutional strengths include agriculture, K–12 education with a growing emphasis on rural education, engineering, industrial technology, criminal justice, and business. The city of Platteville, situated among rolling hills, meandering streams, and a pastoral mix of fields and forest, is southwest Wisconsin’s largest community.
