Position Summary:

UW-Platteville seeks an interdisciplinary postdoctoral scholar to join the UW-Platteville community and lead a feasibility study focused on watershed-scale local food production and distribution in the heart of the Driftless Area of southwest Wisconsin. This opportunity is made possible by the newly established Dairy Innovation Hub that celebrates UW-Platteville connections to the regional agricultural community and is motivated by recent strategic planning and student-led initiatives that highlighted on-campus and local food production as key ideas in a rapidly growing, grass-roots-driven emphasis on sustainability. The feasibility study will contribute to the Dairy Innovation Hub priority area of Land and Water Stewardship by identifying the social, economic, and environmental barriers and opportunities for engaging local producers within the Rountree Branch Watershed to supply more of the food consumed by the UW-Platteville community and, in return, further connect the campus to the economic well-being and land use practices of our local farming community. This position will be an integrated collaboration of scholarship, teaching, and campus engagement.

Responsibilities:

While the exact focus of the study will reflect the expertise of the successful applicant, the overall aims will be to identify opportunities to:

  • increase local food offerings for campus dining
  • enhance local farmer revenue
  • identify innovative approaches to connect local and regional supply chains with dairy production, cropping, and grazing practices that benefit conservation efforts
  • positively affect stormwater runoff and water quality in the Rountree Branch Watershed
  • assess the efficacy of agricultural stewardship groups to inform the potential of creating a Rountree Branch Watershed Stewardship Alliance
  • engage UW-Platteville with local producers through Land Stewardship partnerships; and,
  • obtain funding and/or revenue to implement the suggested practices identified by this study.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

A key outcome of this work will be to strengthen relationships among the UW-Platteville community and the local farmers with whom we share soil, water, and place. This position is funded through the Dairy Innovation Hub and will be housed within the Department of Environmental Sciences & Society to facilitate a multi-disciplinary approach to the study.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

-PhD in any field with relevance to environmental stewardship in agricultural systems operating at the watershed scale, such as Sustainable Agriculture, Geography, Sociology, Environmental Science, Agricultural Economics, Water Resources, or other such related fields.

-Experience or ability to engage in the economic and distribution aspects of local food production
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills
-Interest in contributing to a rich undergraduate teaching and research experience for UW-Platteville students

The academic setting of this project includes a rich and diverse intellectual mix of faculty and staff from across campus, buoyed by passionate advocacy from student groups, and supported by an administration that recently committed to achieve Zero Waste status by 2035. Individuals who are currently and directly engaged in this effort come from the School of Agriculture, Department of Biology, Reclamation, Environment and Conservation Program, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences & Society, and the Office of Sustainability, while support for this and other initiatives continues to grow. This position is ideally situated to catalyze real and meaningful changes in campus operations that benefit the people and environment of the campus, county, and region.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville, founded in 1866, enrolls students in 42 baccalaureate and 9 master's programs. It possesses institutional strengths in middle level education, engineering, industrial technology, agriculture, criminal justice and business. The campus is located in Southwest Wisconsin's largest and most historic community.
