Position Summary:

Student Health Services at UW Platteville invites applications for a full-time (40 hours per week), 9 month, Registered Nurse/Student Health Nurse opening. 

The Registered Nurse/Student Health Nurse contributes to the delivery of primary care for students by utilizing appropriate scientific theory and demonstrating clinically sound skills as a basis for making decisions within the realm of nursing practice specific to college health. The Registered Nurse/Student Health Nurse serves as a member of the health care team to manage the common health concerns of walk-in patients utilizing nursing protocols and by collaborating with and referring to the physician and nurse practitioners as indicated and preparing patients for exams by provider. Specific wellness and health education is demonstrated as a part of direct patient care and as outreach on campus.

The Student Health Nurse is an Academic Staff position established by the University System and is 1.0% FTE, 9-month appointment running concurrent with the academic calendar from late August through May. This position will be Mon-Fri 7:45 AM-4:15 PM.  Starting salary for this position is $47,000 and will commensurate with qualifications and experience. No weekends, holidays, or summers!

Responsibilities:

Provides direct patient care to patients as defined by nursing protocol.

a. Assesses individual patient needs by reviewing and updating the patient history and immunization records on EMR; obtaining the patient history specific to the chief complaint or concern; performing physical assessment specific to the chief complaint or concern, including general appearance, vital signs, height and weight, examination of ENT, lymph, lungs/chest, musculo-skeletal, and skin; collects and interprets appropriate in house lab tests per verbal and/or standing order; provides TB skin testing and screening of results with referral as appropriate; assists with follow-up of patient care as delegated by nurse practitioner or physician.

b. Provides nursing intervention and management of specific illness and injuries per nursing protocol, following established written protocols for delineation of function and treatment plans.

c. Collaborates and refers to physician and nurse practitioner when indicated.

d. Administers and dispenses medications and immunizations per protocol utilizing current principles of pharmacology to guide nursing actions; records administration, observes for symptoms of adverse reactions, and teaches recipient about the medication therapy.

e. Coordinates care when indicated with on and off campus referral sources including emergency facilities, counseling, public health, lab and x-ray, private health care providers, and family planning.

f. Initiates emergency care by assessing need, initiating first aid procedures and CPR as required.

g. Assists providers in monitoring hormonal contraceptive patients according to protocol. Includes oral contraceptives, Depo-Provera instruction and EPC treatment, performing follow-up as directed.

h. Provides individual HIV testing and risk reduction counseling as established by nursing protocol.

i. Keeps an accurate and complete patient record using EMR.

 j. Maintains confidentiality.

  • Provides telephone assessment and triage.
  • Participates in collaborative activities with the Student Health Services team by working in the clinic to prepare clients for exam by provider. This includes opening/setting up clinic in preparation for patients according to clinic protocol, setting up patients (rooming) patients according to protocol, and closing clinic according to protocol.
  • Maintains current CPR certification and RN licensure in the State of Wisconsin or affiliated compact state.
  • Attends conferences and workshops as appropriate.
  • Completes tasks assigned that contribute to quality assurance of clinic.
  • Supports goals and objectives of the Student Health Services and University Counseling Services.
  • Embraces and supports diversity as a part of the educational process. Acknowledges and respects the differences that race, culture, sexual orientation, age, and gender bring to society and how that impacts on delivery of health and mental health care.
  • This position may involve minimal work expectations outside of normal UW-Platteville office hours, e.g., night hours, weekend commitments, travel out of town, etc. -
  • The Student Health Nurse may develop and promote education activities that will enhance health and wellness for the UW-Platteville student community.
  • The Student Health Nurse may represent SHS on health-related committees.
  • The Student Health Nurse may update website content for students, parents, and staff.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Required:

-Associate of Science in Nursing (AdN)

-Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Wisconsin or affiliated compact state.

-BLS certified

Preferred:

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN)
