Position Summary:

The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate engineering courses and labs, engaging in professional development activities, and providing services to the department and the university. We are seeking an individual to develop undergraduate curriculum in Mechatronics, robotic integration, and Smart Manufacturing. Candidates must be able to teach a basic instrumentation lab and automatic controls.

This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position with a 9-month academic appointment. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Universities of Wisconsin System has a nationally top ranked retirement plan and a comprehensive benefits package. Responsibilities:

The primary duty will be teaching undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering.  Mechanical engineering faculty members are also expected to participate in curriculum development, academic assessment, and professional development which among other things may include undergraduate research and scholarly activities, as well as university/community service. Mechanical engineering faculty also serve as academic advisors and are expected to work with colleagues across campus to improve the diversity of the student body and provide an inclusive educational experience. Additionally, faculty may have the opportunity to teach graduate level courses as part of our online MS Engineering program.

Required Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, applicants must respond to all required qualifications.

  • PhD in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a closely related field, earned by June 2025. Candidates who will have completed all academic requirements for their PhD by this date will be considered.     
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related fields.
  • Desire and ability to teach a variety of mechanical and general engineering   courses. A willingness to develop courses in Smart Manufacturing and to teach Measurements and Instrumentation Lab and Automatic Controls is required.  Please see the curriculum as listed in the catalog. Special consideration will be given to those who can teach Engineering Modeling & Design and Senior Design.
  • Ability to utilize pedagogies that are proven to increase students’ engagement and retention.
  • Desire to promote inclusion through inclusive pedagogy and other activities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Record of professional development, or willingness to develop in areas related to teaching, research, or scholarly work.

About Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at University of Wisconsin-Platteville

Mechanical Engineering is the largest major on campus. It currently has 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 6 instructional academic staff, serves approximately 1,000 majors, and graduates approximately 190 students per year. The main program is housed on the UW-Platteville campus with an additional 60 – 100 students enrolled through our online asynchronous Platteville Engineering Partnership (PEP) program. We provide a hands-on, experiential engineering education and our graduates are in high demand throughout Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and beyond. The department has long-standing relationships with industrial partners throughout Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department is dedicated to hands-on engineering education focused on interdisciplinary coursework and cross-disciplinary collaborations outside the classroom. We utilize modern and inclusive pedagogy. We are a strong, student-centered program that prioritizes accessible undergraduate engineering education, effective teaching pedagogy, and dedication to an inclusive learning environment.
