Job Description:

The Women in STEM Program, a division of the College of EMS Student Success Programs (SSP), is seeking student assistants to begin in Fall 2024. Interviews will begin in May and be conducted as applications come in. Student Assistants work in the Plexus Women in STEM Center (Sesquicentennial Hall 250) which is a study and resource space designed to support students’ academic success, with an emphasis on supporting women. Our mission is to recruit and retain more women in underrepresented STEM fields.

Positions require approximately 6-10 hours per week with additional hours the week of big events. The position requires 5-6 desk hours, one-hour staff meeting and 1-2 committee meetings per week. We strive to accommodate your academic schedule as much as possible, recognizing that your studies come first. Pay rate is $11.00/hr and includes the potential of yearly pay raises based on performance reviews.

The Women in STEM Program is coordinated by students under the guidance of Kim Sargent, with assistance from Michelle Godez. As a student assistant, you'll join committees focused on programming for both pre-college and college students. You will have the chance to eventually lead one of these committees. This role is an outstanding opportunity to improve your leadership skills and learn event planning and time management skills. Additionally, you will mentor young girls and support fellow women pursuing STEM majors.

After a year with us, you can apply to become a lead student assistant, further enhancing your leadership abilities. Benefits of working in the Women in STEM Program include networking with industry professionals, collaborating with faculty members, enjoying free meals, and being part of a supportive community of women with shared goals.

Additionally, we are seeking committee members for our college programming events, which usually occur once a month or less. You won't be assigned to every committee, but you will have the flexibility to select the ones that most interest you.

2) Women in STEM Peer Mentor Program
3) Women in STEM Professional Mentor Program
4) Women in STEM Semester Events and Finals Feast (once a semester for each)
5) Women in STEM Banquet (April-Attendance required for all student assistants)

The following one-day, pre-college events will require all Women in STEM Student Assistants to work for part of the day unless class schedule does not allow for it. You can also choose to be on the planning committee.
1) Women in STEM Career Day (October)
2) STEM Launch 10 (Fall)
3) Pioneering Your Future in STEM (Feb and March)
4) STEM Odyssey (Spring)
5) STEM Expo (April)

Student assistants also help with the recruitment of prospective students by representing Student Success Programs and the Women in STEM Program at Admitted Student Days, Pioneer Previews, Women in STEM Panels, Women in STEM Lunches and Math Competition. You can also be a SQH/Busby tour guide and help present at academic meetings if that interests you.

In addition to working at events and on committees, Student Success Programs has weekly staff meeting on Wednesdays from 4pm-5pm. Attendance is expected unless you have a class.
