The University of Wisconsin–Platteville, a regional comprehensive institution within the Universities of Wisconsin, seeks a dynamic and collaborative Chief Information Officer (CIO) to lead the university’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department. The CIO will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for IT services, ensuring alignment with institutional goals while fostering a customer-focused and service-oriented culture.

As a regional comprehensive university, UW–Platteville plays a critical role in providing accessible, high-quality education to students across Wisconsin and beyond, with a strong focus on applied learning, workforce development, and community engagement. The CIO will be instrumental in ensuring that the university’s technology infrastructure, digital services, and cybersecurity posture effectively support these missions.

In addition to leading internal IT initiatives, the CIO will serve as UW–Platteville’s primary representative on technology and cybersecurity matters within the Universities of Wisconsin system, collaborating with peer institutions and the system’s central IT leadership to align technology strategies, share best practices, and address system-wide technology challenges.

This leader must balance strategic vision with supporting the operational team, given the university’s lean staffing model, and play a key role in modernizing IT operations, strengthening partnerships across the university, and leveraging technology to enhance student success, faculty research, and administrative efficiency.

This role serves on Chancellor’s Cabinet and reports through the Associate Chancellor for Strategy & Planning.

The Chief Information Officer is a full time, benefit and paid leave eligible position. 

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Collaboration

  • Develop and execute a university-wide IT strategy aligned with institutional priorities as defined by the strategic plan and system-wide initiatives.
  • Build strong relationships with academic and administrative units, ensuring ITS is a trusted and valued partner.
  • Serve as a key advisor on technology-related decisions, advocating for IT initiatives that drive efficiency and innovation.
  • Understand and effectively communicate institutional strategy and business needs with technical staff.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, transparency, and customer service within the ITS department and across campus.
  • Represent UW–Platteville in Universities of Wisconsin IT leadership meetings and statewide technology initiatives.
  • Nurture IT staff development and growth.

Operational & Technical Leadership

  • Oversee IT infrastructure, enterprise applications, and cybersecurity.
  • Understand and effectively communicate technical opportunities, challenges, and limitations with university leadership.
  • Ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of IT systems to support institutional and system-wide needs.
  • Manage the delivery of IT services to external entities with whom we have support contracts, including the City of Platteville and Rountree Commons residence hall.
  • Lead the ITS team in delivering high-quality, user-centric technology support and services.

Cybersecurity & Compliance

  • Serve as UW–Platteville’s primary cybersecurity officer, ensuring compliance with system-wide security policies and best practices.
  • Collaborate with Universities of Wisconsin system leaders to enhance security measures, respond to emerging threats, and implement system-wide cybersecurity initiatives.
  • Lead campus-wide efforts to promote cybersecurity awareness and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure IT policies and procedures align with compliance requirements, including FERPA, HIPAA, and other relevant regulations.

Change Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Guide the ITS department through cultural and operational transformation as the University shifts from a siloed to a collaborative mindset.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, automation, and cost-effective technology solutions.
  • Lead efforts to modernize IT governance, ensuring effective prioritization of technology initiatives.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Manage the ITS budget effectively, aligning expenditures with institutional and system-wide priorities.
  • Advocate for IT resources while ensuring fiscal responsibility in a post-budget-cut environment.
  • Identify external funding opportunities, including grants and partnerships, to support IT innovation.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in information technology, computer science, business administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive IT leadership experience, preferably in higher education or a similarly complex environment.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • In-depth experience overseeing IT infrastructure, enterprise systems, and cybersecurity in a technical and organizational role.
  • Track record of successfully leading organizational change and fostering a service-oriented culture.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
  • Experience managing budgets and optimizing IT resources in a constrained.
